Judo Terminology

Judo is known as: ‘The Gentle Way‘
The beginning date of Judo was in:  1882
The ‘Mother School’ of Judo: Kodokan
The location of Kodokan: Tokyo, Japan
The founder of Judo: Jigoro Kano
The Judo hall: Dojo
The Judo mat: Tatami
The Judo student: Judoka
The Judo uniform: Judogi
The Judo belt: Obi
Judo instructor: Sensei

What is Randori? Free practice
What is Ukemi? Breakfalls
What is the Back Breakfall called? Ushiro ukemi
What is the Side Breakfall called? Yoko ukemi
What is the Front Breakfall called? Mae ukemi
Pivoting footwork is called Tai-sabaki
Proper gripping is called Kumi-kata
Eight directions of unbalance Happo No Kazushi

There are three parts to a throw:

  1. Kuzushi – Breaking of balance
  2. Tsukuri – Fitting in
  3. Kake – Throwing action

 

Coloured Belts

There are 6 coloured or “Kyu” belts:
Rok kyu: White
Go kyu:  Yellow
Yon kyu:  Orange
San kyu:  Green
Ni kyu:  Blue
Ik kyu:  Brown

 

Black Belts

There are 10 “Dan” grades:

Black
First Dan:  Sho Dan
Second Dan:  Ni Dan
Third Dan:  San Dan
Fourth Dan:  Shi Dan
Fifth Dan:  Go Dan

Red & White Belt
Sixth Dan:  Roku Dan
Seventh Dan:  Shichi Dan
Eighth Dan:  Hachi Dan

Red Belt
Ninth Dan:  Ku Dan
Tenth Dan:  Ju Dan
